Blog with a Cause: NDSS

Down syndrome remains the most common chromosomal condition diagnosed in the United States. Each year, about 6,000 babies born in the United States have Down syndrome. This means that Down syndrome occurs in about 1 in every 700 babies.

In a world that is so diverse and unique, it's almost impossible to not think about the beauty in everyone.  Some are short, some are tall, and some are a little different than others.  At the end of the day, we are all worthy of love and acceptance.  In relation to the NDSS, this cause helps spread awareness and gets individuals with this disability out in the community while also providing them services.  The National Down Syndrome Society, helps highlight an important cause that is very close to many people, especially for those that may know someone with this disability.  Did you know, Down Syndrome can affect  1 in 700 babies?  It affects the 21 x chromosome and triples it.  Which comes to my next point, March 23rd.  This day is celebrated by the Down Syndrome community on this day because  March is the third month of the year which represents the 21st chromosome  being tripled.  The 21st comes from the 21st chromosome, thus being March 21st.  The NDSS, does more than just spread awareness about this disability.  It gets individuals out in the community with support to help them become financially independent and citizens in our community.  If you would like to get involved or even learn more, you can visit their website at https://www.ndss.org.  You can also take part in the annual Buddy Walk which occurs in October; Down Syndrome awareness month.  These walks get people with disabilities together as well as friends and family to show the world how beautiful it is to include everyone.
